Two Opposition Leaders Meet in Maputo to Discuss Regional Democratic Cooperation

MAPUTO, Mozambique – Prominent Zimbabwean opposition figure Hon. Job Sikhala, Chairman and Chief Facilitator of the National Democratic Working Group (NDWG), recently met with Mozambican opposition leader Venâncio Mondlane, leader of the ANAMOLA Party, for discussions focused on democratic governance, regional cooperation, and the future of political reform in Southern Africa.

During the meeting, held over coffee at an undisclosed venue in the coastal city of Maputo, the two leaders exchanged views on the political challenges facing their respective countries and explored opportunities for closer collaboration in advancing democratic principles, constitutional governance, and the protection of fundamental freedoms.

According to those familiar with the discussions, the leaders reflected on the importance of strengthening regional and international networks among pro-democracy movements. They expressed a shared commitment to working together to raise international awareness of developments in Zimbabwe and Mozambique while promoting peaceful democratic engagement and citizen participation.

Zimbabwe and Mozambique share deep historical, cultural, and economic ties that span centuries. Both leaders acknowledged the significance of this longstanding relationship and emphasised the importance of continued solidarity between citizens who aspire to democratic governance, justice, and sustainable development.

The meeting also reaffirmed an existing relationship between the two leaders. On 30 August 2025, Venâncio Mondlane participated virtually as the Guest of Honour at the Johannesburg launch of Hon. Job Sikhala’s biography, Footprints in the Chains, where he addressed guests and spoke about the importance of resilience and democratic leadership.

Both leaders have previously stated that they have faced political persecution because of their activism and advocacy. They reiterated their commitment to pursuing their respective political causes through peaceful means, maintaining that they remain dedicated to advancing the aspirations of the people they represent despite the challenges they have encountered.

The discussions concluded with a shared pledge to deepen cooperation, strengthen regional democratic partnerships, and continue advocating for governance based on constitutionalism, accountability, human rights, and the rule of law.
