Job Sikhala’s South African Court Case Postponed as Prosecutors Review Investigation Findings

PRETORIA, South Africa — Veteran Zimbabwean opposition leader Job Sikhala appeared before the Pretoria Magistrates’ Court on Monday for the fourth time, as South African prosecutors continue to assess whether there is sufficient evidence to proceed with criminal charges arising from an explosives case dating back to November 2025.

The matter was postponed to 28 August 2026 to allow South Africa’s National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) additional time to study the investigation docket and determine whether the case should proceed to trial.

According to Sikhala’s legal team, forensic DNA and fingerprint analyses found no evidence linking either Sikhala or his uncle, Alexander Thema, to the explosives allegedly discovered in the vehicle in which they were travelling. The defence further maintains that CCTV footage shows an individual planting the explosive devices in the vehicle prior to their discovery.

Based on these findings, the prosecution is reviewing whether the available evidence meets the legal threshold required to continue with the case. The NPA’s decision, expected when the matter returns to court on 28 August, is likely to determine whether the prosecution proceeds or the charges are withdrawn.

The case stems from an incident in November 2025, when South African authorities alleged that explosives had been found in the vehicle carrying Sikhala and his uncle. Since Sikhala’s initial arrest, the Pretoria Magistrates’ Court has repeatedly postponed proceedings at the request of South African police, who indicated that investigations were still ongoing.

Sikhala, one of Zimbabwe’s most prominent opposition figures, has long maintained that the charges are politically motivated. His legal representatives argue that the forensic evidence and surveillance footage undermine the prosecution’s case and support their contention that neither accused had any involvement with the explosives.

The veteran politician has a lengthy history of arrests in Zimbabwe, where he has frequently alleged political persecution because of his opposition activities. According to his supporters, he has been arrested more than 60 times over the course of his political career without any conviction ultimately being upheld. He also spent nearly two years in detention in Zimbabwe before the charges against him were dismissed on 30 January 2024.

Attention will now turn to the next court appearance on 28 August 2026, when the NPA is expected to announce whether it will proceed with prosecution or discontinue the case in light of the completed investigation and the evidence before it.
