Tragic Passing of Jayden Adams at Age 25

By hoaf  Published On July 11, 2026

Jayden Adams, the promising midfielder for Mamelodi Sundowns and South Africa’s national team, has tragically passed away at the age of 25. Adams participated in three group matches during the recent World Cup, where he showcased his talent on the global stage.

In the tournament opener, South Africa faced a challenging 2-0 defeat against Mexico, where Adams started the match. He also played in the 1-1 draw against Czechia, being substituted in both encounters. Adams later came off the bench during the 1-0 victory over South Korea, but did not participate in the subsequent last-32 match, where South Africa was eliminated by Canada.

Statements of Mourning

The Minister of Sport, Gayton McKenzie, expressed deep sorrow in a statement: “It is with profound shock and a heavy heart that I have learnt of the passing of Jayden Adams. South African football has lost one of its brightest young talents, and our nation mourns alongside his family, teammates, and the millions of supporters who watched him grow from a promising academy prospect into a full Bafana Bafana international.” The exact cause of Adams’ death has not been disclosed, but police have opened an investigation following the discovery of his body at a residence in Schotsche Kloof, a suburb of central Cape Town. “Circumstances surrounding this incident are under investigation,” said Western Cape police spokesperson FC van Wyk.

FIFA President Gianni Infantino also shared his condolences, stating, “It’s so incredibly sad to hear that South Africa midfielder Jayden Adams has passed away just weeks after featuring in his nation’s historic World Cup campaign. My thoughts and condolences, as well as those of everyone at FIFA and the global football community, are with his family, friends, and teammates. The Bafana Bafana and Mamelodi Sundowns star will be sorely missed. May he rest in peace.”

A Rising Star

Adams rose through the ranks of Stellenbosch FC’s youth academy, becoming the first product of the academy to secure a professional contract. Over his career, he made 139 appearances for Stellenbosch, contributing to the club’s triumph in the 2023 Carling Knockout. In January 2025, he transferred to Mamelodi Sundowns, where he continued to make his mark.

The South African Football Players Union (SAFPU) released a statement reflecting on the loss: “The SAFPU is devastated by the untimely passing of Jayden Adams. He had only recently represented South Africa at the 2026 World Cup, carrying the hopes of the nation with pride, courage, and distinction. His passing is an immeasurable loss to his family, teammates, clubs, the football fraternity, and the country at large. We extend our deepest condolences to the Adams family, Mamelodi Sundowns, Stellenbosch FC, Bafana Bafana, and all those whose lives he touched.”

As the football community grieves this loss, Adams’ legacy as a talented player and beloved teammate will undoubtedly endure.
